The Health Benefits of Camping

Last updated on May 21st, 2020 at 09:51 am

Camping is not only fun and a great experience, but it’s also great for your mental wellbeing and physical health.

So, if you need an excuse to book a future camping trip, what better reason than to improve your health?

Improvement of Stress Levels

Being outside in general is proven to lower your levels of cortisol. Cortisol is a big stress marker and so when we are outdoors, our bodies are physically proving to us that we’re getting less stressed.

Nature helps to reduce feelings of fatigue, increases your energy and decreases anxiety and bad moods.

A Break from Social Media & Screens

Social media can sometimes be overpowering in our lives, and can consume a large amount of our day. There is a whole load of negativity on social media and staying away from it can of course – make you feel more positive overall!

Screen time is also detrimental on your health because the blue light that comes from your devices 60 minutes before sleep can greatly affect the quality of sleep you get due to an increase in your brain activity! It can affect sleep levels, and less sleep can cause you to become unhappy and fatigued.

Family Relationships

If you camp with your family, and even close friends, it’s no doubt that your relationship will be improved with them after a trip together. Often, your mind is focused on the other stresses of life, such as work, social media, money and worries, but when you’re camping, it’s a great time to focus on what matters most.

It’s a good time to do teamwork activities which will also boost your relationships as you help one another away from your phones etc.

Natural Light Sleep Cycle

A natural light sleeping cycle is great for putting you into a natural routine, rather than a stressed one. We are so used to getting up to the sound of an alarm and doing things exactly the same each day, that it can be good to wake up naturally with the light, once the day starts less stressfully, it should go on that way too!

Seeing New Places

Seeing new places is also a great reason to go camping. If you’ve always wanted to visit the lake district, or go up to the North of Wales – then why not do it, and camp at the same time? The UK has plenty of scenic areas to explore, which will make you feel at one with nature and more relaxed away from the big cities.

Or if you’re feeling brave, you could go abroad and camp!

New Hobbies

Going camping is also a great reason to start a new hobby that you enjoy, such as:

  • Hiking
  • Canoeing
  • Bird Watching
  • Cycling

Having a hobby can be good for your mental and physical health. Having a hobby focuses your mind on something that you’re good at, rather than things that you might struggle with, and it’s also a great way to exercise whilst doing something you enjoy.
